Mitt Romney, A Target of Vicious Religious Prejudice and Intolerance Decries Statement Condemning Religious Prejudice and Intolerance

The Naïve Dismal Political Economist is Confused

Mitt Romney and his right wing sycophants have condemned a statement issued by the U. S. Embassy in Cairo, a statement they say is an apology issued to those who murdered U. S. Ambassador to Libya and others.  Here in full is the statement that they are so horribly offended by.

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.

Now to everyone except a highly partisan politician this sounds like a reaffirmation of the very best of American ideals.  But apparently for Mr. Romney and friends “respect for religious beliefs” is not a cornerstone of American democracy.  This is surprising since as a Mormon Mr. Romney and his religion have been the subject of intense and ugly attacks by the intolerant among us.  Of all the people who have major roles in public life at this time Mr. Romney should be the one who should most embrace this philosophy.  Think of the outrage he and all of us  would feel against attacks on the Mormon religion.

The only explanation for all of this is that Mr. Romney, despite all evidence to the contrary, is so determined to portray Mr. Obama as going around apologizing for America that he will even side with those who spew religious intolerance and use their right of free speech to do so..  So here are some other actions by the President that we think Mr. Romney will call an apology.

Barack Obama today announced he would be attending his daughter's soccer game this weekend.  Mitt Romney immediately charged Mr. Obama with going around the world and apologizing to the enemies of American football, that is, soccer loving, brie eating, commie sympathizing, socialist Europeans.

Barack Obama today announced new water quality standards for drinking water in rural areas.  Mitt Romney immediately charged Mr. Obama with gong around the world and apologizing for America’s drinking water, which, Mr. Romney said was the best in the world and needed no apology from a President who probably drinks a glass of non-American wine once in a while.  Mr. Romney said he does not use any alcohol, and that all of the alcohol he does not drink is American.

Barack Obama today announced he would celebrate America’s love of freedom in his speech in October at the UN and that he hoped the UN session would not seriously disrupt regular traffic in New York.  Mitt Romney immediately charged Mr. Obama with apologizing for traffic in New York City, which Mr. Romney said was the finest traffic jam in the world and he assured voters that if he is elected traffic problems will only get worse not better as his opponent would like.

Barack Obama today announced that he was personally horrified at attacks on Mitt Romney’s religious beliefs and that he would cease to work with any group or individuals that adopted that strategy.  Mitt Romney immediately charged Mr. Obama with apologizing to bigots.

Yeah, didn't happen but that does sound right, doesn’t it.
