First Out of the Gate in the Race for the Ugliest Comment on the Sandy Hook Shootings is Mike Huckabee

And His Offensive Comments Are Going to be Hard to Beat

It took less than 24 hours for at least one prominent Conservative to try and make political points from the horrific murder of children in Connecticut.  Former Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee blamed the shootings on the fact that God has been removed from the classrooms.

Huckabee Blames Shooting on Removing God from Schools

Mike Huckabee told Fox News that today's deadly massacre in an elementary school in Connecticut was due to the lack religion in public schools.

Said Huckabee: "We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we've systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage because we've made it a palce where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability?"

Presumably Mr. Huckabee means that had Christian religious services been allowed in schools the gunman would have never shot and killed 20 children and 8 other adults.  Now it is highly unlikely that is the case, but it is not impossible.  But what is impossible is that if the gunman had been denied access to the weapons that were used then the killings would not have occurred.  That is not conjecture, it is not spin, it is not a guess or a wish.  It is pure fact.

Mr. Huckabee is known for his absolute devotion to anti-abortion rights, he calls himself “pro life”.  And yet he argues forcibly to allow everyone to have access to semi-automatic rifles and pistols, weapons whose only purpose is to kill people.  Exactly how this is pro life is something Mr. Huckabee will never explain in this life, but if there is an after-life he will have a lot of explaining to do.

But no one should be upset with Mr. Huckabee for his comments, for the serve a very useful purpose.  They illustrate the true feeling of Conservatives, that for all their talk about how they revere life they are more than willing to allow the death of 20 school children and 8 adults in order to protect what they see as a more important right than the right to life.  And that more important right is the right to own and possess assault weapons.  In their minds if grade school children have to die to protect that right, well that's a price they are willing to pay.  Pay with children's lives of course.

And thanks to Mr. Huckabee now every American knows how they truly feel.
