The lunatic fringe of
the Republican Party or what most of us call the mainstream Republican
Party is getting bolder and more assertive of its views. They are starting to feel they can be more public because they recognize that the U. S.
media will pretty much ignore their radical outbursts. And it appears they are right.
But many of the
positions of these people are so bizarre that the foreign press has started
to take notice. Such is the case with Georgia ’s
Congressman from God, Mr. Paul Broun.
Mr. Broun sits on the House Science Committee, which seems appropriate
since he is apparently a doctor. What is
not appropriate is his views,
which are reported by a British newspaper.
Here is just an excerpt.
Broun also says that
theories regarding the origins of the universe and evolution represent
"lies to try and keep me and all the folk that were taught that from
understanding that they need a saviour".
Wow, a U.
S. Congressman sitting on an important
Congressional committee dealing with science thinks evolution is a conspiracy,
the earth is only 9,000 years old and was created in six days. Well one thing good, surely this must be an
easy pickup of a House seat for Democrats, we mean, what person would even
considering voting for Mr. Broun.
Uh, not so fast.
Paul
Broun, who is running for re-election as Georgia representative this November
unopposed by Democrats, made the comments during a speech at a baptist church
last month.
Yes that’s right, the Democratic Party is so
dysfunctional in Georgia
that it cannot even find a single person to challenge this raving maniac. The party of Roosevelt, Kennedy and Clinton
must be very proud of themselves.
The problem here is not Mr. Broun, he is what he is, nothing can be done about that. The problem is that in a democracy the role of the press is to expose people like this so that voters can make educated and intelligent choices. And the role of an opposition party is to provide those choices. The failure of Democrats to mount a campaign against this idiocy and the failure of the media to report on Mr. Broun are the real problems here.
