Mitt Romney U Turns Again, Now Headed in a “Right” Direction

Don’t Worry If He “Left” You Stranded, He Will Be Back That Way

The really fun thing in watching Mitt Romney’s political maneuverings is the way he lurches like a drunk from posturing position to posturing position, trying to market his image in exactly the right way to appeal to a maximum number of voters.  The Dismal Political Economist had hoped that Mr. Romney had gone straight, but alas, that was probably a hopeless hope.

Studies Show a Diet Rich in  Dunkin Donuts Promotes
Weight Loss and a Healthier You!

Mr. Romney looks at a politics the way a businessman looks at bringing out a new product into an existing market.  Product image and position is the key, and if market conditions change a good businessman simply changes the marketing strategy of the product.  If weight reduction is suddenly very popular, the product is pitched as a method of reducing weight, even if the product is Dunkin Donuts.

For a long time Mr. Romney had been in general election mode, ignoring his political rivals and

acting like the had the Republican nomination all nicely sewed up and his only task was to defeat Barrack Obama.  Now Mr. Romney is looking back, as well he should, and sees the conservative candidacy of Texas Governor Rick Perry pulling into the starting gate.  This could be a problem.

Mr. Romney Looking Left

Mr. Romney Looking Right

So Mr. Romney has abruptly changed (again).  He will now run as the great Conservative.  He has put together a team of 63, yes count them, 63 conservative lawyers. They will emphasize the conservative positions of Mr. Romney

One cochair of what Romney calls his Justice Advisory Committee is former
Appeals Court justice Robert Bork, a martyr of conservative legal thought whose 1987 nomination to the Supreme Court was sunk by liberals.

The second is Mary Ann Glendon, former US ambassador to the Vatican for President George W. Bush and a passionate opponent of abortion rights

And in case anyone doesn’t know where Mr. Romney stands on torture, well apparently he stands solidly in favor of it.

Other prominent conservatives on Romney’s list include Steven Bradbury, who headed the Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice Department under Bush and defended the administration’s use of waterboarding on detainees in US custody

All of this will fit nicely with Mr.Romney’s sudden denunciation of the debt ceiling/deficit agreement, which came immediately after the agreement was passed so as to attract as little national attention as possible.  And Mr. Romney, who wasn’t going to sign any pledges has now signed the basic conservative pledge on marriage.

Mr. Romney has joined fellow radical conservatives Michelle Bachmann and Rick Santorum in supporting a presidential commission on religious liberty, as he finally noticed that the major problem in Ancient Rome the U.S. is persecution of Muslims Christians.  And like every good Conservative, Mr. Romney has a secret million dollar donation that needs to be covered up.

So Mr. Romney is going right, to head off Mr. Perry, and if he is successful he would appreciate it if no one brings up these positions in the general election, where he will be driving in the center of the road, hoping to avoid a collision from either direction.
