Further Evidence that Newt Gingrich May Be Ready to Leave the Building – He Says He Will Stay in the Republican Race All the Way to Tampa

About as Strong as Evidence as Possible That He is Thinking About Quitting

The one sure thing in politics is that when a candidate is losing and says they are not thinking about quitting, they are almost certainly about to quit.  Take a look at how Rick Perry quit the race right after he said he was in it all the way.

Now we have Newt Gingrich who should have quit while he was ahead, that is, when he actually won a primary.  Mr. Gingrich won his home state of Georgia on Super Tuesday, and finished dismally in the rest of the races.  Had he quit at that time he might have gained a small (ok, very very small) measure of respect.  Instead he pressed on to Alabama and Mississippi.

The Gingrich campaign has signaled that a failure to win in Mississippi and Alabama would mean the end of the campaign.  So the statement by Mr. Gingrich that he is not quitting for any reason is pretty convincing.

At the rate things are going right now, Romney can’t even get a majority of delegates before June. Here’s a guy who has spent $40 million of his own money, run for six years, outspent his opponents by about 10 to 1 and he can’t get to a majority. Santorum was a pro-union Pennsylvania senator who was one of the leadership that was defeated in 2006, that set the record in Pennsylvania for the size of his defeat … Romney is a moderate – he’s pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-tax increase when he was governor. He wrote Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in America, into Romneycare. And he invented Romneycare, which basically is Obamacare at the state level …

I’m going to be all the way to Tampa, there’s no question in my mind. I think it’s important to win Alabama. It’s important to win Mississippi. But I also have 174,000 donors, 95 percent of them under $250, and I think they want to see the big solutions, Ronald Reagan-style visionary candidate, willing and able to debate Obama and defeat Obama on the debate stage.

Of course, what it is convincing of is that Mr. Gingrich may soon be leaving.  The only thing that could stop him is if he is unable to find packaging large enough to pack his ego in so he can take it with him.
