The “Send Your Kids, Not My Kids to War” Caucus Loses
The idiocy that passes for foreign policy by those who would
involve the United States in
yet another Mideast war will be in full force as Iran
and the U. S. and its allies
have reached
an agreement on Iran ’s
nuclear program.
Under
the interim agreement, Iran
would stop enriching uranium beyond 5 percent, a level that would be sufficient
for energy production but that would require further enrichment for making
bombs.
So what’s the problem.
Well a lot of people think the U. S. should have increased
sanctions, those people having no understanding of negotiations. On the Republican side there is the desire to
beat up on the Democrats. And some
Democrats are afraid of being called soft, so they are supporting more
sanctions.
But the U. S. had to give some help to moderates in Iran , and had the U.
S. not agreed to relax sanctions Iran ’s
hardliners would have won. That would
have meant more enrichment, and increased the likelihood of military
action. How exactly that would be of
benefit to anyone other than politicians is not clear.
Unlike historical prejudices, modern prejudices produce immediate reactions. The "but", and there always is a "but", is the root of prejudice, the excuse for prejudice. It is not an unseen monster in the night. It is the decisions and individual actions we take everyday. We are the enemy and we need to get over it.
