Rick Santorum Says the People in a State Can Decide What Kind of State Constitution They Can Have – Unless They Decide the Wrong Way

Then Rick Santorum Gets to Decide for Them

Somewhat lost in the news earlier was the fact that a Federal Appeals Court upheld (no they did not overturn) a lower Federal Court decision that found that California’s Prop 8, a voter referendum that banned same sex marriage violated the Constitution.  Essentially what they determined was that the ban on same sex marriage had no purpose other than to deny free and equal rights to same sex couples.  Rick Santorum, the Presidential candidate who would dictate to Americans what is right and wrong was horrified.

Mr. Santorum is of the mind that the people of a state ought to be the ones to decide what is in their Constitution

Santorum said he was particularly troubled by the 9th Circuit ruling because the federal judges had overturned a state constitutional amendment approved by the voters. “Here, you have the 9th Circuit saying that a constitutional amendment is unconstitutional. I mean, that’s just, on its face, almost absurd,” he said. “The people of the state of California can decide what kind constitution they have.”

and there might even be some credibility to his position except for this.

Suppose the citizens of New York, and Massachusetts and Washington and soon to be other states decide that their state Constitutions ought to allow same sex marriage. Under Mr. Santorum’s idea of democracy, (read theocratic dictatorship) the U. S. Constitution would be amended to prohibit that.  Yes, it’s okay for decisions like same sex marriage to be decided at the state level, as long as they are decided in the “right” (pun intended) way.

All of this just illustrates that Mr. Santorum is indeed qualified to be President, President of Iran that is.  Rick, expect the Ayatollahs to be calling just as soon as you lose this election.  After all, the fellow they have in there now is a little crazy, and they need someone who is not quite as crazy. (no, that is not a compliment).
