It’s Right There in the Constitution – The Fantasy One Republicans Believe In, Not the Real One
Our old friend Grover Norquist, he of wanting to destroy government and wanting to pursue every tax decrease there is, has come up with a new strategy. As we all know the temporary tax decrease known as the Bush era tax cuts were temporarily extended, again. The new expiration date is the end of 2012, at which time if Congress does not act the rates return to the level they were during the Clinton administration.
You all remember the Clinton administration and its high tax rates, the ones that produced record job growth, strong economic growth and a balanced budget. Or what Republicans call the “bad old days”. Well Mr. Norquist is ready to pull out all the stops in order to prevent the tragedy of a strong economy from repeating itself. Here is what he said in an interview with the National Journal.
NJ What if the Democrats still have control? What’s your scenario then?
NORQUIST Obama can sit there and let all the tax [cuts] lapse, and then the Republicans will have enough votes in the Senate in 2014 to impeach. The last year, he’s gone into this huddle where he does everything by executive order. He’s made no effort to work with Congress.
Now real experts on the Constitution, the ones who have actually read and understand it may cast cold water on such an idea, but Conservatives take a more expansive view of the document. They are certain Madison and Monroe believed that allowing a temporary tax decrease to expire was an impeachable offense. It’s right in there, right after the section that allows the government to arrest and hold citizens indefinitely, and just before the section that specifies that President Gingrich, if there ever is one, doesn’t have to obey court decisions he doesn’t like.
