And Trump Makes Things Worse, Not
Better
A day of war is a horrific day, and no
matter how bad things are during peacetime, no peacetime day is as
bad as a day in which the nation is engaged in a major war. But for
a nation not at war today was about as bad as it could be.
- The mass shooting in Las Vegas is a personal and national tragedy. Even worse, it will not be the last mass shooting in the nation's history.
- The President has open contempt and disdain for the victims in the Caribbean. Instead of focusing on relief he instead presided over the awards ceremony at a golf tournament. He dedicated the trophy to the victims, which for people suffering from lack of basics like food and water and facing economic ruin must be a comforting thought.
- Trump has also completely undermined any talks with North Korea by calling them a waste of time even as his Secretary of State conducts those talks.
- The fact that the Secretary of State has not resigned in the face of Trumps comments proves once and for all that he is totally unqualified for the job, that he took the job only for personal prestige and that once he took the job any decency and self respect that he possessed has been lost.
- The Washington Post reports that a ship containing a huge weapons cache headed for Egypt was intercepted. The ship was from North Korea and this is disturbing not only for the fact that arms sales from North Korea are destabilizing the Middle East but the fact that Egypt was the buyer. This could indicate Egypt might well end its peaceful relationship with Israel.
- In Spain government troops viciously attacked Spanish citizens in Catalonia who were trying to vote on independence. No government can or should long survive when its troops attack unarmed civilians regardless of what their motivation was.
- Kurds are also becoming more aggressive in their fight for independence. This looms as a threat to the entire Middle East.
- Saudi Arabia has announced that they might, just might, allow women to drive. That this counts as progress shows just how low the bar is with respect to human rights in that nation.
- Having suffered no consequences for lying about health care the Republicans have now started lying about tax cuts they are proposing. A democracy is built on the foundation that elected leaders will not try to deceive voters. At this time conservatives whose zeal to enact their legislative goals is so great that they have lost all morality are the greatest threat to democracy as a form of government in America.
