Apparently Thinks the Rest of Us Are
Stupid
College basketball is and has been
mired in scandal. At the University of Louisville scandal is
business as usual. The school engaged in offensive actions to
recruit high school seniors. The head coach's reaction, he knew
nothing, nothing.
And now with a new scandal, payments to
player families, the same coach claims
the same things.
"These allegations come as a
complete shock to me," Pitino said in a statement released by
his lawyer, Steve Pence. "If true, I agree with the U.S.
Attorney's Office that these third-party schemes, initiated by a few
bad actors, operated to commit a fraud on the impacted universities
and their basketball programs, including the University of
Louisville. Our fans and supporters deserve better and I am committed
to taking whatever steps are needed to ensure those responsible are
held accountable."
Asked in an interview if he expects
Pitino will keep his job, Pence said: "I would certainly think
so. I don't know why it would be otherwise."
Of course Pitino will not lose his
job. His only job is to win, regardless of how many rules he
violates or how much he claims his ignorance of violation absolves
him of blame.
Update: The University has announced it will fire Pitino. This is not motivated by shame or remorse, but the fact that the NCAA may punish the school and the university is trying to mitigate that.
