NYT Conservative David Brooks: Republicans Are Intransigent, So Political Impasse is All Mr. Obama’s Fault

Conservative Logic Takes Another Huge Hit – No Damage Done Though, No Lack of Logic Can Hurt Conservative Cause

David Brooks who writes in the New York Times is of the supposedly intelligent and decent Conservatives that the paper has tried (and usually failed) to recruit to its op/ed pages to give the appearance of fairness.  Mr. Brooks does seem to be bright and intelligent and has many pieces that reflect these characteristics.  His column on Tuesday was not one of them.

Mr. Brooks takes Mr. Obama to task for (gasp, gasp) engaging in politics with his deficit proposal and job creating policies.  Here is what Mr. Brooks has to say

In his remarks Monday the president didn’t try to win Republicans to even some parts of his measures. He repeated the populist cries that fire up liberals but are designed to enrage moderates and conservatives.

Now if one thing can be said for certainty about Mr. Obama, it is that he has spent over 2 ½ years trying desperately to win over Republicans.  And even Mr. Brooks knows why he has not been able to do so.

The White House has clearly decided that in a town of intransigent Republicans and mean ideologues, it has to be mean and intransigent too.

Does Mr. Brooks even know what the word “intransigent” even means?  Does he have no understanding of a situation in which one side will not give on anything, at any time and for any reason the other side has no choice but to take the battle to the electorate?  Given the past performance of Republicans does Mr. Brooks not realize that at this time they would reject anything Mr. Obama proposed, even if it was their proposals to begin with?

“Mean” Mr. Brooks?  What exactly is mean about proposing tax increases on the very wealthiest of Americans to go along with budget cuts on the very neediest of Americans?  As for enraging moderates, do you not know that the vast majority of Americans support the approach the President has taken?   Do you, Mr. Brooks, even read what you have written before sending it on to the editors of the NYT, who apparently will publish anything in their doomed quest to be regarded as fair by Conservatives.
