Massachusetts Republican Senator Scott Brown Turns Ugly in Senate Race,

Note to Massachusetts:  For Those of You That Thought He Was a Different Republican, You Need to Re-Think

In a contest among Democrats candidates hoping to win the nomination to face Republican Senator Scott Brown in Massachusetts next fall, the front running is former Obama consumer protection adviser and Harvard Professor Elizabeth Warren.  Ms. Warren, participating in a debate with other Democratic hopefuls made the rather clever and light hearted remark about Mr. Brown, who had posed  au natural  for a magazine much earlier in life.

Greg Sargent, in his column “The Plum Line” in the Washington Post reports on Mr. Brown’s response.

Today, Scott Brown was asked by a local Massachusetts radio show to comment on Warren’s joke, and he offered his own joke in response: “Thank God.”
The exchange took place on WZLX this morning, audio of which you can listen to here:
INTERVIEWER: Have you officially responded to Elizabeth Warren’s comment about how she didn’t take her clothes off?

SCOTT BROWN: [LAUGHTER] Thank God.

INTERVIEWER: [LAUGHTER] That’s what I said! I said, “Look, can you blame a good-looking guy for wanting to, you know…”

Yes, Ms. Warren is a very dignified women in her 60’s, so Mr. Brown, instead of boosting himself in the eyes of everyone by making some light hearted comment just used the occasion to make a rather ugly and demeaning remark.  And yes, there is a double standard in these things, get used to it.

Mr. Brown defended himself,

“You know what, listen: Bottom line is, you know, I didn’t go to Harvard, you know, I went to the school of hard knocks, and I did whatever I had to do to pay for school,’’

But as the Boston Herald notes, like many of his colleagues, Mr. Brown has the facts wrong

Warren graduated from the University of Houston and attended Rutgers School of Law in New Jersey, both state schools
Mr. Sargent went on to say

Brown picked up the charge here by claiming that unlike Warren, he “went to the school of hard knocks.” And now he’s citing his posing nude as proof that he’s had it tougher than Warren did.
It’s going to be particularly interesting to see how Warren handles this one.

Based on her public persona so far, not to worry, we think Ms. Warren will do just fine.
