What is Really Happening in the Employment Picture, With Pictures
To listen to the Republican candidates, and that’s about all one can do in the current political environment, one would get the impression that the entire length of the Obama administration has been one of steady decline in jobs. Of course, getting one’s news from the mainstream media is usually not the way to get accurate news, and employment is no exception.
When Mr. Obama took office jobs were being lost at a significant rate. Surprisingly, that did not stop the minute Mr. Obama started to reside in the White House. In fact, job losses continued for about one year. What happened then, well the oft criticized Stimulus package kicked in, the auto industry came back to life after General Motors and Chrysler were saved and the job creation picture got better.
Here is the total private sector employment since January 2009. Yes, that upturn is not what is being reported is it? We are talking about creating 2.2 million private sector jobs since the recession with respect to jobs bottomed out in late 2009. Not it does not get the U. S. back to where it was, but it is not the job creation disaster Republicans and their allies in the press would have everyone believe.
Ok then, where is employment reduction continuing to happen? Well here is total government employment since January 2001.
So government, which is supposed to be helping the economy and employment is actually cutting jobs. Anyone know how massively reducing employment by government is supposed to increase employment?
And why the slowing of job creation, well that Stimulus thing has gone away, so the rate of job creation has been reduced. That kind of makes sense, doesn't it.

Also notice that during the Bush administration there was a lot of job creation in gaovernment. So Mr. Bush gets some credit for increasing employment by having government go out and hire people, which is of course the exact opposite of Conservative poltical philosophy. That doesn't mean they don't take credit for it though.
And the really ironic thing (those gods of political irony just will not quit) is that much of this job reduction is being done by Republican states and Republican governors, who then turn around and criticize Mr. Obama for not creating more jobs.
