A Compliment to Texas Gov. Rick Perry: He Is Against Putting the Confederate Flag on License Plates

Well Sort Of, But With A Conservative That’s As Good as It’s Going to Get

Texas is currently struggling with the issues of unemployment, taxes, illegal immigration, quality of education and most important of all,  whether or not to allow the Confederate Flag to appear on its license plates.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans applied for the Texas plate but opponents have called it highly offensive to African-Americans.

Mr. Perry issued a somewhat lukewarm statement in opposition.

Mr. Perry, a Republican, previously declined to reveal his personal views on the matter, but on the presidential campaign trail Wednesday in Florida he said he was against his state issuing the license plate. "We don't need to be scraping old wounds," Mr. Perry told Bay News 9 in Tampa, Fla.

But then equivocated

"That is just his personal belief," said Lucy Nashed, a spokeswoman for the governor. "He still believes this a matter for the Department of Motor Vehicles to decide."

Mr. Perry, meet Mr. Romney.  Still, for any Republican candidate to take even a watered down, somewhat ambivalent position against the policy of allowing the Confederate Flag on license plates is a positive step forward, and we salute Mr. Perry for doing so.  Of course, that is just our personal opinion, we believe that any commendation of Mr. Perry is a matter for the Department of Motor Vehicles to decide.

As for the group that is trying to get Texas to display the Flag on its plates, the Sons of Confederate Veterans there is this.

The group is a national organization open to the male descendants of any man who served honorably in the Confederate forces during the Civil War.

The group did not explain how any person who fought for the preservation and expansion of slavery of African men, women and children could have “served honorably” in any capacity.  They do need to look up the definition of “honorably”.
