Arkansas Gov. Beebe Vetoes Unconstitutional Abortion Rights Restriction Bill

Republicans Vow to Override – They Just Don’t Care About that Constitution Thing

[Update:  The Republicans in Arkansas have over-ridden the Governor's veto on this clearly Un-Constitutional law.  Apparently they feel the Constitution applies as the supreme law of the land only when it suit their purposes.  Typical.]

Republicans say that they love and respect the Constitution.  Some even carry copies around with them, pulling it out at all times to quote it when it supports something they want to do.  But few of them understand that respecting the Constitution means accepting it when it supports things they don’t want to do.  That concept is apparently just too restrictive for them.

In Arkansas the Republican dominated legislature passed a bill restricting abortion rights past 12 weeks of pregnancy.  The Governor vetoed the bill, on these highly questionable (to Republicans) grounds.

“Because it would impose a ban on a woman’s right to choose an elective, nontherapeutic abortion well before viability, Senate Bill 134 blatantly contradicts the United States Constitution, as interpreted by the Supreme Court,” Beebe said in his veto letter. “When I was sworn in as governor I took an oath to preserve, protect and defend both the Arkansas Constitution and the Constitution of the United States. I take that oath seriously.”

Well everyone can see how “Love the Constitution” Republicans would hate something like that.
