There is much to
dislike about the soon-to-be Republican Presidential nominee, but the
religion of Mitt Romney and his private religious beliefs is not one of
them. Mr. Romney has shown himself to be
deeply religious, as is his right, and those beliefs have absolutely no right
to be present in any political campaign.
In fact, bringing up Mr. Romney’s religion can only benefit him in
generating a backlash of sympathy for Mr. Romney and a spasm of disgust for
anyone who makes Mr. Romney’s religion an issue.
That is the reason
that we wonder if Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat is really
trying to boost Mr. Romney’s campaign by
making disparaging remarks about aspects of Mr. Romney’s religion and
family.
“While discussing swing states,
Schweitzer said Romney would have a “tall order to position Hispanics to vote
for him,” and I replied that was mildly ironic since Mitt’s father was born in Mexico , giving
the clan a nominal claim to being Hispanic. Schweitzer replied that it is
“kinda ironic given that his family came from a polygamy commune in Mexico , but then he’d have to talk about his
family coming from a polygamy commune in Mexico , given the gender
discrepancy.” Women, he said, are “not great fans of polygamy, 86 percent were
not great fans of polygamy. I am not alleging by any stretch that Romney is a
polygamist and approves of [the] polygamy lifestyle, but his father was born
into [a] polygamy commune in Mexico ."
And yes the Obama campaign has denounced these
comments, but that will probably be ignored by the Romney campaign as they will
seek to exploit the idiocy of the otherwise sane and intelligent Governor of
Montana.
All of this also illustrates the difficulty
candidates have with their so-called supporters. Earlier a self described ‘Democratic
Operative’ criticized Mrs. Romney for being a stay at home mother, rendering
substantial damage to the Obama campaign.
And Mr. Romney is not immune either, as a campaign manager had suggested
that Mr. Romney’s positions were written like an etch-a-sketch and could be
reset for the general election.
Maybe a new rule in elections is needed, that the
only comments and positions that can be attributed to candidates are comments
made by and positions taken by the candidate himself or herself. Yep, that would work for everyone.
George Romney was born in Mexico (with US citizenship) to Gaskell Romney and Anna Pratt, devout Mormans and monogamists. You are correct, Schweitzer debases the discussion with his dribble. Mitt will create his own Etcha-Sketch moments without the mindless blather of fools.
