It’s Going to Get About as Ugly As It Can Get
For months this Forum has been forecasting doom for the Obama re-election campaign because the Supreme Court has now allowed unlimited anonymous political donor to set up organizations that will spend an almost unlimited amount of money on defeating Mr. Obama. Now the ads are in the pipeline and are coming to a television in your home.
One of the largest of these independent conservative groups, an organization called Americans for Prosperity, will launch next week what is perhaps the biggest attack on Mr. Obama so far in the 2012 election campaign.
Beginning Monday, Americans for Prosperity will air ads criticizing the president’s handling of Solyndra, the solar-energy firm that went bankrupt after receiving grants from the government. The group is spending $6 million on air time. The ads will air in a handful of key presidential battleground states of Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan and Wisconsin
But wait, there is going to be more, a lot more.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has aired negative ads against at least one Senate Democrat. And American Crossroads, the group founded with the help of Republican strategist Karl Rove, has spent time attacking Mr. Obama as well.
Another conservative group, the Center for Union Facts, will air a new ad on Fox News during the Republican debate on Monday. The organization, which opposes labor unions, says it plans to spend $10 million this election on candidates that support pro-business policies that reign in labor unions.
Americans for Prosperity plans to spend more than just about any other conservative group in 2012. In addition to paying for television and cable ads, the group has an army of volunteers and paid employees in key states.
As for the Obama re-election team, yeah they are trying to go this route also. But not with any real enthusiasm or any chance to match the billionaire funded outside groups. Yes, Mr. Obama is bringing a knife to a gun fight.
